My BioTech Culture #8 - Newsletters I Actually Read
How I get my news about business and science.
After a decade of mastering math and AI, I ventured into BioTech.
My BioTech Culture is a collection of content I consume to help my techy brain cells grow outside their natural environment.
A couple of years ago I discovered (probably a bit behind all the rest of the world 🫣) that I really like newsletters! In different periods I read newsletters about HealthTech, marketing, UX, startups, and I even published a newsletter myself for a time.
When I started my path in Biotech, I naturally looked for newsletters, and after some experimentation, I settled on a few newsletters that I actually read 🗞️
Hope you’ll enjoy some of these as well!
Where Tech Meets Bio / Decoding Bio
These two weekly newsletters are definitely my favorite, and I've been a loyal reader of both since I discovered them. They offer weekly updates on the global biotech ecosystem, links to notable new research, and in-depth stories about science and business - they do a wonderful job of curating the vast amount of information in this huge industry!
While they do sometimes overlap in the news category, the non-overlapping sections are the majority, and I enjoy reading both.
Endpoints Weekly
This one, I have to be honest, I wouldn’t say I enjoy reading, but it’s more like I feel that this is stuff I should be aware of. There are dozens of newsletters by Endpoints, with varying topics and frequencies, and I am subscribed to (and actually read!) the weekly digest. I browse through the headlines to stay informed about major deals, trends, and clinical trial news, but I usually click to read just one or two headlines.
Asimov Press
I have this habit: whenever I stumble upon a company that seems interesting and they offer an option to "stay informed" on their website, I usually subscribe. In most cases, they never end up sending anything, and those that do are mostly promotional. I get bored after a couple of reads and unsubscribe.
One exception was when a CEO of a company I had registered with wrote back to me personally to ask what I was interested in. This was during my earliest days in biotech, and I was honestly just intrigued. I wrote back, sharing a bit about myself, and after a bit of correspondence, I asked if we could talk so I could get some advice on my journey. We did, and that CEO has become one of my mentors, and still is to this day!
Another exception, as you might have guessed by now, is the Asimov newsletter. I absolutely love the grand vision of this company (and I loved the talk by Alec Nielsen, Co-Founder and CEO, at the a16z summit). Their newsletter perfectly captures the spirit of the brand. They recently launched a "classic" newsletter with a weekly digest, which is a nice addition to the ones mentioned above. They also publish deep bio-related reviews, and even some bio-sci-fi!
That’s it for today. Hope you enjoyed reading, and please let me know if you have further recommendations for me as well!
